Travel to the Annual Meeting


The American Society for Premodern Asia this year provided financial support for travel and lodging under the Graduate Student Award program to the following 32 member graduate students and post-doctoral fellows:

The American Society for Premodern Asia awards funds after the Annual Meeting to reimburse graduate students’ incurred travel and lodging expenses, at the conference hotel. The ASPA Graduate Student Award Fund is supported by Donations from the membership and matching funds from the Society’s general fund. Currently, a maximum of $1,500 is available for reimbursement to each applicant who fulfills the terms. NB: the application process is open as well to post-docs, who will be awarded reimbursement according to the same criteria as graduate students provided there are sufficient funds available.

Award fund will be distributed by check or electronic transfer.

To be considered for the award of support funds, a graduate student must be a current member of the American Society for Premodern Asia and must have presented a paper at the Annual Meeting. Send an application letter, stating paper title, date, and time of presentation, and amount of funding support requested within a month of the last day of the Annual Meeting (27 April 2026), should be submitted to the Office of the Secretary and include the following documentation:

 

For fund transfer, provide the following (otherwise a check will be sent):
Bank Name
Bank Address
Bank SWIFT ID
ABA (routing)
Bank Electronic Account Number
Your Name, Address, etc., associated with the bank account
Your Social Security Number (for IRS Form 1099 for reimbursements of more than $600)

No application will be accepted after 27 May 2026.

Note: The ASPA does NOT reimburse Membership dues, Meeting registration, or meal expenses.

No award can be made without this information. Application letters and supporting documentation must be submitted, by email attachment with attached expense documentation. No applications will be accepted after the deadline. No more than a total of three awards will be made to any graduate student.  No application will be accepted after 27 May 2026)

Please include in the application letter the total sum of expenses for which you request reimbursement.

Applications will be reviewed, and awards will be mailed within a month of the deadline of receipt of applications, this year, early-June.
As of 11 June 2026, all Award Funds have been distributed, either by check in the post or by electronic fund transfer.

The ASPA will not reimburse expenses for lodging arranged at non-conference hotels.

Note: Graduate students who expect to apply for Graduate Student Award Fund support must indicate their intention when registering online for the meeting. In general, those who fulfill the above requirements are guaranteed funding.
